Privacy Policy

Moosou helps you keep track of what you spend, on your own or with a partner. Money is personal, so we collect as little as we can, never sell it, and never use it for advertising. This page explains, in plain words, what we keep, why, who else touches it, and what you can do about it.
Who we are
Moosou is run by Alica Moser, an individual based in Québec, Canada (“we”, “us”). Alica is the person in charge of the protection of personal information for Moosou. For anything about your privacy, write to privacy@moosou.ca.
What we collect
- Your account: your first name, your email address, the language you use and your password. The password is stored only as a scrambled one-way hash; we can’t read it.
- Your budget: the entries you add (amount, description, date, category, who paid, how it is split, whether it is private, whether it repeats), your categories, your currency and your settings. If you share a budget, also the name you give your partner and, if you invite them by email, their email address.
- Voice notes and receipt photos, if you use them, and the text read from them.
- Moosou Plus: whether your budget has Plus, the plan, and when it renews or ends, plus a reference number from our payment provider. We never see or store your card number.
- Activity: the days on which you opened the app, so we can count how many people use Moosou each week. We don’t record what you do in the app.
- Technical data: your IP address is used for a short time to stop abuse (for example, too many login attempts) and may appear in error logs. It is not stored with your account.
How we use it
- To run Moosou for you: show your entries, work out who owes what, statistics and repeating entries.
- To turn voice notes and receipt photos into entries, when you use those features.
- To suggest a category or a split, based on the entries in your own budget.
- To send the emails Moosou needs: confirming your email address, resetting your password, and invitations you ask us to send.
- To handle Moosou Plus.
- To keep Moosou secure and working, and to count, in total, how many people sign up, use the app and pay for Plus.
We don’t use your data for advertising, we don’t sell or rent it, and Moosou has no analytics or tracking tools from other companies.
Who can see your data
- Your partner, if you share a budget, sees your shared entries and your first name. Entries you mark as private are seen only by you.
- Us: the admin page shows only totals and the email addresses of the latest sign-ups. As the person who runs the server, Alica can technically reach the database, but only looks at your data when you ask for help, when it is needed to fix a problem or keep Moosou secure, or when the law requires it.
- Service providers that help run Moosou, each only for its task:
- DigitalOcean hosts our server and its backups in Toronto, Canada.
- Groq (United States) turns voice notes into text, reads the text of an entry and reads receipt photos. We send a recording, photo or text only when you use one of these features, and only to get the result back.
- Resend (United States) delivers our emails. It receives your email address and the email’s content.
- Stripe and Link (Canada and United States) handle payments for Moosou Plus. Purchases are sold through Link, Stripe’s merchant of record, so you give your payment details to them directly and their privacy policy applies to that information.
- Authorities, only when the law requires it.
Some of these providers are outside Québec, in the United States, so your information may be processed there and may be accessible to authorities under the laws of that country. Before sending information outside Québec, we check that it will be adequately protected, including through our agreements with these providers.
How long we keep it
- Entries are kept as long as the budget exists. You can change or delete them at any time.
- Voice recordings and receipt photos are deleted automatically: after 3 months without Plus, after up to 3 years with Plus (you can choose a shorter time for recordings). The entry and the text read from it stay.
- If you leave a shared budget, your private entries in it are deleted. Your partner keeps the shared history.
- If you delete your account, we delete your login, your email address and your private entries. If you shared a budget, your partner keeps the shared entries, including your first name as the person who paid. If you used a budget alone, the whole budget is deleted.
- Backups: we keep daily copies of the database for 14 days, and our host keeps weekly copies for about 4 weeks. Deleted data disappears from all backups within about 5 weeks.
- Payment records are kept by Stripe and Link as long as tax and accounting laws require.
On your phone or computer
Moosou doesn’t use cookies. It stores your login and a few preferences (like the theme, the language and your filters) in your browser’s storage, and keeps a copy of the app’s files so it opens quickly and works offline. Logging out removes your login from the device.
Security
All connections use HTTPS. Passwords are stored only as a hash, logins are limited against guessing, and the server is kept up to date. No system is perfect; if a breach ever puts your information at real risk, we will tell you and the authorities as the law requires.
Your choices and rights
- See and take your data: export all entries as a file in Settings → Expenses, or ask us for a copy of everything we hold about you.
- Correct it: edit your entries, name and email in the app.
- Delete it: delete entries, leave a budget, or delete your account in Settings → Your account.
- Withdraw consent: stop using voice notes and photos, or delete your account, at any time.
- Ask or complain: write to privacy@moosou.ca; we answer within 30 days. If you’re not satisfied, you can contact the Commission d’accès à l’information du Québec or the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
Children
Moosou is not meant for children. You need to be at least 16 to use it.
Changes
If we change this policy, we’ll update the date at the top. If a change matters for how we use your data, we’ll tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect.
